Staid and unemotional? I never remember him so…not even world-weary or jaded. Maybe unflappable with a dry sense of humor, but even that is wrong. I never met him, but I'm pretty sure I'd have liked the man. You ought to read his book "Canoeing with the Cree," which is about padding from Minneapolis to Hudson Bay in 1930. There was more to the man than many realized. He was an outdoorsman with an adventurer's soul.
Another Christmas quote of his I like is: "Christmas is a necessity. There has to be at least one day of the year to remind us that we're here for something else besides ourselves." To which I say a loud AMEN!
