TRAILBLAZER

Someone has to be the first, set the trend, lead the way. Of course those who never miss an opportunity to voice their opinions will weigh in on whether you're an astute early-bird or just an overly eager jump-the-gunner.

Not that anyone with pioneer spirit pays much attention. Trailblazers tend to follow their own whims, choose their own paths and timing.

If you're a tree—perhaps an oak or maple, maybe a walnut or willow—being the autumnal torchbearer means donning the seasonal dress of orange or red or yellow while everyone else is still decked out in that same old been-there, done-that summer green.

Yup, somebody always has to step up and get things rollin'…

HI GRIZZ - oh how I love that color - sure sign of cooler dryer weather and a glorious display of Autumn hues and shadows to fall over the earth. Hallelujah!

No traIl blazers here yet though the leaves are beginning to fall especially the birches. They are turning a pleasant soft gold but nothing spectacular. The leaves in your photo are lovely.

A rebel trailblazer…I kinda like that—agree with it, too. You can't be much of the latter without a big dose of the former.

Autumn is, indeed, right around the corner. And as far as I'm concerned, it couldn't have happened at a better time!

No jump-the-gun autumnal leaves in my yard, either. The view out the window along both sides of the river is green, green, green. Any tans or pale yellows are more from lack of recent rain than season. But elsewhere nearby, here and there, a few bright hints are starting to appear.

It's just the same with the red berries Grizz - which tree will turn first - this year it was the hawthorn and then the rowan.

Here, for my first indicator plants I look to vines—either poison ivy or Virginia creeper (which you may know as woodbine.) Oddly, this year, neither has yet turned, nor has sumach, and brilliant read shrub that's always early.

Seasons differ; no two are ever alike.

Grizz,

We have got to blaze a trail between our house and yours soon. I hear my husband has had the opportunity to meet you but I have not have the opportunity.

Susan…

I've been rather holed up and sulking for several weeks with a leg injury. But fear not, I will have to try and get over to your place the next time I see you folks working and am, myself, at least semi-presentable. (Trust me, this latter point is necessary; first impressions can't be redone.…and I've already blown that opportunity re. your husband.) And yes, I have met your husband, plus a week or so ago, your father-in-law.
