TIMES A'CHANGING

Times are a'changing. It's increasingly starting to look like autumn here along the river. Not much in the way of color yet, as other than poison ivy and Virginia creeper, there are few early-turning sorts of trees and shrubs hereabouts to dazzle with gaudy leaves. A few bits of anemic yellow on the box elders, the odd rusty brown dinner-plate-sized leaf on a sycamore—but otherwise, the landscape is still mostly green. Faded and frayed, perhaps, but green.

The real color will come in a week or two, maybe three. Somewhere around the 26th of the month is usually the peak.

And yet…there's no mistaking the new season's takeover. The look and feel, sound and smell and mood is definitely autumnal, from the noisy flocks of Canada geese regularly winging overhead, to the dew-damp morning air carrying hints of windfall apples and distant woodsmoke.

Yesterday was rainy and cool. No, make that cold—the day's high never managing to edge beyond the mid-40s˚F. Cold enough that Myladylove built the season's first fire in the woodstove. Which felt good and was most welcome, as it took a decidedly uncomfortable chill from the house while we worked between showers to finish a handful of small jobs on our endless remodeling list.

Today promises to be fairly sunny and reach into the low-70s˚; so no woodfire will be needed. But a milepost has been passed nevertheless. The times are definitely a'changing.

Hi Grizz - lovely picture and great peek into the changing of the seasons along the river. I could smell that hearth wood fire. I read your last post as well - and your "day off to wander" was perfect. I enjoyed thw ride, the view, the food, the delight and the 'time spent' Glorious and energizing.
Our life is changing along with the seasons as we plan to move from our cozy bungalow and forge on to western NY to a lovely town called Salamanca bear the Seneca Indian reservation and by the Alleghany River. Tucked into the woods. Al so bittersweet. I emailed you so I wont go on about it here.
Back to you - I have missed you - looked for you - hope you are well
Love Gail
peace.....

Gail…

I missed you here…and apparently missed answering your previous email. I've corrected (and apologized for) that oversight.

The part of NY you're heading to is wonderful, lovely country, with a lot of history. I know it somewhat from my trout wanderings. And I have any number of books in my angling library which focus entirely or in part around that area. I could pretty easily become envious of your destination! ;-)

I'm well, so no worries there. Just frantically trying to get as much done on the cottage as possible before bad weather sets in and the remodeling has to be back-burnered until next spring. Plus my firewood cutting and splitting awaits…

So I haven't fallen off the face of the earth, but just gotten lost in life's thick woods.

Your heron looks resigned to the coming cold...nice shot. Personally, I am not resigned to it at all!
How 'bout you?

Moonmuser…

I look forward to cool, cold, wintery weather. Now, late-November/early-December—the other half of autumn—is, after April and May, my favorite time of the year.
