AN "OH MY!" SKY

Spectacular sunsets are not regular occurrences here along the river. Oh, we have the occasional gaudy display. But because we're located in the lower part of the landscape (rivers don't flow on hilltops, you know) we're generally below the best view of any final dusk lightshow.

Sometimes, though, the Master Painter throws up a sunset so spectacular and all-encompassing that even us folks in the bottom of the barrel can be properly awed…and last night's offering was one.

The photo doesn't come close to doing it justice. Not in color-range, vivid intensity, and knock-your-socks-off wow-factor. A pathetic attempt at best. You really had to be there!

Moreover, it was one of those wrap-around, everywhere sunsets where the spectacle wasn't located only in the sky's western quadrant, but splashed from one horizon to the next—north, south, east, and west. Fiery colors which drenched the full 360˚ canopy. All the light, all the sky, suffused with yellow-pink-orange-lavender and a thousand hues in between, and here and there, just for artistic contrast, intermittently laced with streaks of glowing turquoise.

A genuine "Oh, my!" sky.

I know what you mean about the camera not capturing what the eye sees. Kind of humbling in a way. But since your photo is so beautiful, it must have been a knockout view! Aren't you glad your eyes are now tuned up?
Thanks for sharing,
Florence

Out to Pasture...

It was, indeed, a really dandy sunset...for anywhere! Especially for here. And you're absolutely right, I'm so grateful that my eye surgeries turned out well. For me, sight is extremely important. Humbled, too, when, as a photographer, I try and capture the visual essence of a scene. I mostly fail, of course. A photo can never truly capture a moment.

Glad you liked the pix.

Gail...

I wish you could have seen the real thing in person...then you'd have really been wowed!

Gail…

Some things just don't translate well into photos, and "in person" is the best way, always, to see a sunset.

Pretty day here today, BTW, bright sun and maybe warming into the mid-50˚F. I hope. River's up, though.

Be good! (More or less.)

I agree with Gail--oh, my.
I find sunsets irresistible. I just end up taking photo after photo when there is a spectacular sunset. And good as any of these photos might be, they do NOT do justice to what nature does.

Nope, I agree. Sunsets are truly one sort of shot which really shows how insufficient photography is at conveying the reality of a scene. Even the best of the best come up short. There's an inherent visual/physical/emotional power you simply can't capture or recreate…and the same things happens with shots of the Grand Canyon. Nothing substitutes for the power of being there—not even 3D imagery or Virtual Reality.

Nope, words can't convey, nor can a photo. It was an amazing sunset.
