HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BERNIE!

Some folks you meet via these blogs are just that…"blog friends." Maybe you'd become closer if you got to know them better, in person rather than through the screening curtain of cyberspace.
Others, however, you know and like and feel completely at ease with; you also count them as a genuine friend immediately, because the real person is out there—honest and open, their heart and soul showing for all to see. Bernadette Wood, a.k.a. "Bernie" of On My Own, is one of those wonderfully authentic and sincere people—sweet of spirit, straightforward, deeply caring. A joy to know, and an honor to call a friend.
Bernie is having a birthday today. It doesn't matter what her chronological age is…her heart is not a day over sweet-sixteen. If you haven't already, I hope each and every reader of this post clicks on the link above and drops by Bernie's place to wish her a happy birthday.
And from here on the riverbank…
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BERNIE!!!

Bernie…

You are very, very welcome…and absolutely deserving. I hope you have a truly wonderful birthday. I do, indeed, consider you a friend, and am honored to do so.

I meant every word, too. Bernie is a special delight, a blessing to know. And I have no doubt just as sweet and lovely in person as online.

So far as I'm concerned, readers such as Bernie (and you!) are the best—and really the only—reason to do a blog. Life's true wealth is measured in family and friends.

Gail…

Read your post this morning—before I spent 5 hours getting eyes examined! And loved it…that's your post, not the exam. Bernie is a great lady with a lovely spirit, and deserves the best birthday wishes.

Me…I'm now home, pupils dilated to where I resemble an owl—can't read, can barely type, can't (or shouldn't) drive, haven't eaten since breakfast, am hungry, brain is fried, and my granddogs have been delivered for pooch-sitting while my daughter and son-in-law go to Florida. Moon is on the bed looking invaded. I've just glanced in the mirror and decided I look highly high…or maybe like a highly high owl. Whine, whine, whine…

P.S. Hope things are going okay with your Mom.

I do so agree about Blog Friends Jim - some of themn (you included) become real friends and kindred spirits - so happy birthday to Bernie via your column. Nice to read you again - have been away on holiday and am just catching up.

You are indeed right. I think there's something in the human heart—a sort of innate perception—that knows when you've found a kindred spirit. Whether you meet them in person or via some form of once-removed communication—distance, age, gender, politics, religion, education, economics, lifestyle—none really matters so much as the immediate sense of harmonic awareness that resonates unmistakably. Friendship isn't a decision, it's an event—it simply and magically and wonderfully happens.

Hope you had a truly lovely holiday. It's good to get away…and good to get back home. I'm glad to hear from you and have missed your posts—though I've been really busy lately and have turned into a shamefully laggard blogger and blog-commenter.
