RED SKY AT MORNING…

Well, the dawn sky this morning was certainly red…and pink and magenta and orange and violet and lavender and—well, colors and hues they haven't yet gotten around to giving a name. Moreover, the whole kaleidoscopic sky-swirl of shades changed every instant, a constant process, evolving, metamorphosing, so that any photo was already outdated before the completion of the shutter's wink.

Some moments simply can never be captured—not with digital images or carefully-chosen words. The beauty of nature is regularly too powerful for such paltry human restrictions. The world's greatest painters, with their finest brushes and oils, will forever lack the talent to render even a mediocre sunrise onto a canvas.

Which doesn't keep any of us from trying, and shouldn't, in spite of it being an unachievable goal. So here's a shot of this morning's sky, a mere blink of a moment, as seen looking east from the front yard. I know it's inadequate…and I'm glad. For some things, you really need to be there.

Then I don't have to tell you how far short this photo falls—but it sure made being outside worthwhile.

Yes, indeed…the real event, I mean.

It's a lovely photo, we've been having some beautiful morning skies here too but living in a vally I never see the full effect of them. The same with sunsets - they're always just out of sight:)

Thank you. Actually, I have the same problem down here in this river valley—most of the spectacular sunrises and sunsets are out of sight. I'll see a bit of color now and then, rarely a real sky show…but I'd guess I miss 90 percent of both.

An absolutely gorgeous shot, Grizz, the kind of image that usually brings epiphanies. When I am lucky enough to be present for such moments, boundaries seem to fall and I experience something that feels like eternity, timelessness.

I love sunrises and sunsets. Nature comes up with such a delightful palette. I sometimes think there is no way to capture all the shades--although, your lovely photo appears to come close.

'Awesome' should do it. Thank you.

beautiful photo and probably a beautiful moment -painters can never do this justice -sunrise,sunset art always looks sort of cheap.

I can almost smell the crisp morning air Grizz. I think you have captured the morning sky very well.

George…

[Sorry to be slow in replying…we've had a bit of an Internet problem here last night and this morning.]

I know exactly what you mean. There is something of substance beyond the realm of mere colorful dazzle in such skies—a certainty which goes back to the root meanings of awesome and magnificence.

I did my best given the few moments I had, but it sure pales by comparison—lacking in both color latitude and breadth of the sky-wide screen.

Robin…

Awesome it was. You're welcome.

Some scenes are just beyond human rendering, regardless of your chosen medium. We can only do our best and admit our limitations.

The air was crisp, for sure, though I'm not sure I did much breathing beyond a quick gasp.
