COUGH! COUGH! CHECKING IN…

The sky is gunmetal gray, the light flat and dim. The weather service predicts snow this evening and throughout the night, though without expectations of accumulation. From the looks of things, they could be right.

I know it is colder than when I got up at 5:15 this morning…45˚F then, 37˚F now. I also know I've been shivering and felt chilled to the bone all day, though that's probably not related to the weather.

At the beginning of the week, I had to attend an out-of-town conference. I hadn't been feeling all that well during the latter part of last week and over the weekend, and suspected that whatever had laid Myladylove low for a few days early last week had been passed along. But reservations had been made, fees paid, and people were counting on me to be there…so sick or not, I went.

This is a serious conferences. Seminars begin right after a very early breakfast and continue pretty much nonstop for the next dozen or more hours. Lunch and dinner are "working" meals. Your time is well spent and the meeting informative, productive, inspiring, occasionally fun, but even when you're in tip-top shape, exhausting. If you start out halfway sick, however, with what might have been a mild dose of the flu, such a demanding schedule and days-long energy-drain can prove a brutal ordeal.

The drive there, the conference itself, and the trip home on Wednesday afternoon became one of those increasing struggles to simply survive long enough to die in your own bed.

I spent all yesterday down for the count, finally making it as far as the living room and my recliner about 8:00 p.m. Today has been modestly better in that I've remained upright for an hour at a time on several occasions. I might even manage supper.

Between bouts of snoozing, I have been reading various blogs via my iPod. This is the first time I've actually made it down the hall to my desk. With luck, I hope to be out and about the next day or two. The weather is supposed to be sunny and back in the 50s˚F. I noticed a few blooms as I drove home Wednesday, and want to see what going on here. Of course, given my fevered state, those visions might have been nothing more than wishful hallucinations.

Sorry to hear of your illness, Grizz. Best of luck in the coming days. Keep an eye out for spring and the healing power it brings.

get well soon.
what's the name of that beautiful little bird? I love to see your birds and plants which are so different from ours in the UK.

Bonnie…

Thank you. I am mending, I think, though I'd like it to be faster.

George…

I had hopes I'd not catch whatever it is I've caught—though that's not to realistic when your partner gets sick first. Time will do the necessary healing, I expect. However, spring is right out there, just beyond the horizon, and I don't want to miss a minute.

Thank you.

AfromTO…

That's the problem…this is not a convenient time to get sick. There are things that have to get done this weekend and I can't just crawl back into bed for the duration. Wish I could.

Val…

Thank you. I'm enjoying what rest I can manage, which isn't enough. But so long as I keep my fever down and more-or-less under control, I don't feel too awful. Can't say I'm enjoying things, though. I'd rather be in bed.

Marianne…

Thank you. The bird's name is a tufted titmouse. It's one of the most common dooryard birds here along the river, friendly though a bit on the shy side, but always around and working the feeders. It's call is a loud, clear "peter, peter, peter." You can't really tell in this photo, but one of the things I like about titmice are their rather bluish legs and feet—quite unexpected a color, but it goes well with their overall dress.

Get better soon, Grizz. Thinking of you.

The other day 15 deg. C here! Everyone going round the village with crazy-happy smiles on their faces. Back to much colder temps now, however.

Gail…

Thank you. Didn't get the other message. I'm doing better, or at least not feeling so awful. And have had some rest and food, sat up awhile, and now I'm worn out again…so back to bed. Nighty-night. :-)

Thank you. Appreciate the thoughts. I'm on the mend, just need time and a few more pills—though what I'd really like is for a leprechaun king to pop out of the bushes and smite me with a magic shillelagh, thereby instantly restoring my decrepit, ill-used and oft-abused carcass to, say, circa 1985.

It's currently 25˚F out, but supposed to be 48˚F tomorrow and 60˚F a couple of days later.

Rowan…

Thank you. Chicken soup sounds pretty tasty, actually. Rest has sure made a big difference. Another day or two and I ought to be in fairly good shape, relatively speaking.

Sorry to be slow, but haven't had the best day. However, maybe the worst is over and tomorrow will be better. Thank you, always.

This is not the time of year in which to fall ill. This time of interlude, between the cold of winter seeping away ad the promise of spring warmth creeping in.
Who knows what manner of microscopic beasties are hovering about just waiting to take advantage as we lower our guards to welcome spring.
AHA! they cry. We gotcha!
Fight back. Sleep. Drink tea. Read. Then sleep more. The wee beasties will retreat. Or else join you on the recliner.

Thank you. I'm feeling quite a bit better today. Not 100% yet, but way better than yesterday. Good enough to write a post.

KGMom…

You know, this is always my most susceptible time of the year—though this time around, I believe I would have escaped if Myladylove hadn't gotten sick the week before and/or if I could have not had that conference to drain me down completely. Though in fairness, I was pretty much a goner before I ever left home.

The good news is that I think I'm about to crawl back out of my hole, as least for a little while today and maybe a bit longer tomorrow. 'Bout time.

Thank you.
