LAST HURRAH

Snow swirls as the river rises.

Early March wouldn't be its predictable gnarly self without delivering at least a few final displays of wintry bluster. That's what we've had this morning—little snow-squalls of thick-flying oversized flakes that might cause newcomers and alarmists to think we've suddenly taken a u-turn back to mid-January. Or I should say the mid-January of a typical winter, though certainly not the mid-January of this particular winter's unseasonably-warm incarnation.

Anyway, it was all a ruse, a ploy designed to deceive us into believing spring's fair maiden is way off beyond the distant horizon…when it is, in fact, she is already sashaying down yonder hill—hips swinging, tresses flying, verdant green dress shimmering in the gleaming sun.

Nope, March's old trickery has lost its credibility; the gambit fails. Those of us who've been making this same circular journey for more years than we like to think are not in the least fooled by such weather chicanery. We recognize a last hurrah no matter how fervently it sputters and spits. Even now, merely an hour after all those blizzardy histrionics, the sky has cleared and every flake that fell is now melted into watery oblivion. Not a shred of would-be setback evidence remains. Moreover, by Tuesday the temperature will be in the mid-50s˚F and they predict we'll see 61˚F on Wednesday.

Nice try, March—but no sale.

Your river looks rather full too Grizz.

Yes, March is playing tricks with us too.

Weaver…

Yes, the river is full and muddy from rain following a series of severe thunderstorms and tornados that passed through here on Friday. We didn't actually get much of that bad weather—but a couple miles south and maybe a mile north received pretty hard hits—lots of rain, high winds, hail. And toward the center of those respective cells, quite a bit of damage from high winds.

I also snowed again today, early this morning, then the sun came out and melted everything off. Tomorrow it's supposed to be twenty degrees warmer, and warmer still on Wednesday. Just March messing around with us.

However, this has been one of the warmest, if not warmest, winters on record.
I fear that such warming bodes ill--what with early season tornadoes being fed in part by the lack of snow pack on the ground.
On the other hand, I do take your point--March is a wily month, eh?

I think we're all worried when it comes to the impact our unseasonably warm winter will have on the 2012 tornado season...and if last Friday is any indication--and I believe it was--with good reason. Like the flowers and returning birds, it appears to be at lest a month early; but what will it also mean for length and severity? This could also prove a record breaker.

Thought of you yesterday. Was listening to WGN-AM and someone called in to say their Turkey Vultures had returned early. The city born and bred host was rather at a loss.... but I understood. ")

But I bet that host could discuss, at length, the merits of the Cubs over the White Sox, or the latest offering from Lady Gaga.

To each his own; the mouth reveals the heart. I'm an unrepentant buzzard man.
