ADVENT COUNTDOWN

Stars rise and set, that star shines on:
Songs fail, but still that music beats
Through all the ages come and gone,
In lane and field and city streets.
And we who catch the Christmas gleam,
Watching with children on the hill,
We know, we know it is no dream -
He stands among us still!
—Nancy Byrd Turner, "The Christmas Star "

[The word "Advent" comes from the Latin adventus, which means "coming." In the Christian church Advent is that period of expectant waiting leading up to the Nativity of Jesus. Some prefer to think of it as a "Countdown to Christmas." If you've ever had an Advent calendar, you know that each day prior to Christmas has it own window, usually hidden behind a little flap or door, behind which is a scene or verse from the Scriptures. I thought it would be fun to take that idea and post a daily photo with a bit of text below—a stanza or two from a Christmas poem or a few lines of prose from a favorite Christmas story. The photos aren't intended to be tied with the text. Some are just ones I meant to run with a post this past year, but for whatever reason, didn't. To set these posts apart from my regular—or irregular!—ones, I've given them a different typeface and look.]

Your Advent posts wouldn't be complete without a scene form your river. Just like a river flowing on, things come and go in life, forever changing, this verse brought to mind...loved ones no longer here, but how they are forever with us still and how we too...will be someday.
Makes me want to really soak in my moments with all my senses! Riverdaze assists me in doing this, I so appreciate your words and photos. Visiting is a pleasure!
Have a Joyful Christmas,
Wanda

Wanda…

Yesterday I got to thinking about Christmases past. Remembering my grandparents' home, the way it looked and felt early in on Christmas morning, before the sun came up, the wonderful smells of cooking and baking and candles, the decorated tree, the aunts and uncles and a cousin or two, friends and neighbors, all the laughter and teasing, carols on the radio or Victrola, familiar stories told anew…and love so thick in that room you could have spread it around the world.

It so filled my heart with joy, and broke it at the same time while filling my eyes with tears, because of all those who were there on those long-ago Christmas mornings, only I and one cousin remain.

Life is finite. We don't know how long we have, and like you, I want to make the most of every moment—to enjoy and share and love, to give of myself because of the joy I find in giving, and to look around, because of the wonder and beauty to be seen.

Thank you for all the kind and I know, heartfelt words you've written. I hope you have the most wonderful, beautiful, shared and joyous Christmas of your entire life with your lovely family—and I know you'll carry that spirit with you always.

Merry Christmas!

Hi Grizz-

Oh this day and Eve is so blessed and magical - and promises all that is good. I too remember those who have passed - looking from above at all of us carrying on and loving one another. What greater tribute than to love one another.

"Merry Christmas Grizz" and in the pure spirit of the season - "I love you".
Gail
peace.....

Merry Christmas to you, Giggles.

And thank you so much…though frankly, we been so busy (and I've been sick) I'm not sure either one of us has quite grasped this new life. For example, we just realized we ought to go out and find a "first Christmas" ornament, or at least make one. Oh, my!

Have a wonderful, worry-free (no job worries, anyway, right?) Christmas. Ho, ho. ho!

Gail…

What a tribute, indeed, to love and care for one another. The mystery is why we don't practice it more often. To help my friends and family and neighbors always makes me feel better; I'd rather give than receive any day. There is nothing better than to share. Love is life's greatest joy.

Merry Christmas, Gail…and know I love you and your heart and spirit, too. I mean that, sincerely. Have a great celebration—and don't forget the wonder and blessings behind it all.
